Scenario

After its creation the 272nd Infanterie Division was transferred to the Mediterranean French coast along the Spanish border to guard against an Allied invasion. On June 6, 1944 strong American and British forces landed in Normandy. Immediately bogging down by the difficult terrain and staunch German defenses, Allied air and material superiority were slowly gaining ground and threatened to break out. Hundreds of miles to the south sat the 272nd.

On June 29th the command finally came „Die 272. I.D. wurde sofort im Eisenbahntransport an die Invasionsfront geworfen.“ The Division would be moved by rail to the invasion front. The trip would be made under constant threat of an Allied air attack.

On July 4th, a short air attack caused several casualties and killed or wounded many of the horses from 7th Artillerie Battery of G.R. 980. Fire further caused the munitions to explode rendering all four guns useless.

On the 5th of July the train of G.R. 980 was again attacked, but this time by 12 low flying Lightning’s. On the first approach the two locomotives were immediately and severely damaged, losing all steam. On the second approach they caught fire to the front part of the 14.Kompanie transport wagons with the field kitchen, the writing desk car and four of the heavy PaK Anti-Tank guns were now in flames. Rescue attempts were abandoned due to the exploding PaK ammunition. On the third approach the Lightning’s targeted the depleted stock of horses and destroyed the entire communications unit and bikes. Despite the attack the regimental veterinary, Oberveterinär Dr. Slemr, many of the horses were rescued. At the 4th and 5th approach all the command staffs motor vehicles were severely damaged. Two lives were lost and a further four wounded. The aircraft now left believing their job was completed.
