German Marching Drill
| Angetreten! | AHN-gay-tray-ten | Fall in! (at attention) |
| Dress at close interval as commanded and stand at attention as in Stillgestanden. If you have a weapon stand at attention as in Grundstellung. If you are also called to attention with Stillgestanden be sure to click your heels together. You must always fall in wearing your Feldmütze unless ordered to wear your Stahlhelm. The Gruppenführer will establish the right side of the formation and everyone should fall in to his left or rear in a line as ordered. The Gruppenführer will order the Gruppe to form a line as follows: Gruppe! In linie zu einem Gleide. Angetreten! - Form a single line standing side by side. Gruppe! In linie zu zwei Gleidern. Angetreten! - Form two lines one behind the other facing forward. Gruppe! In Reihe. Angetreten! - Form a single row standing one behind the other. Gruppe! In Doppelreihe. Angetreten! - Form a double row of men standing one behind the other. Gruppe! In Marschkolonne. Angetreten! - Form three rows of men standing one behind the other. | ||
| Antreten! | AHN-tray-ten | Fall in! (not at attention) |
| Antreten is used only as a request for form up. When this is used you should form up in position but not at attention, as in Rührt, Euch. The Gruppenführer
will usually use this in order inform you to quickly assemble your
gear and get into position in preparation for the command Angetreten or Stillgestanden.
| Stillgestanden! | SHTILL-gay-shtahn-den | Attention! (in formation) |
Stillgestanden calls you to attention. Your position should be as follows:
| ||
| Richt Euch! | RICKT OIK | Dress Right, Dress! |
| Richt Euch
is an order to adjust your dress (your position in relation to theFlügelmann) without breaking formation. Snap your
head sharply to the right and align your body and feet with the Flügelmann by making short sharp shuffles, with the cloth of your Feldtunic elbows slightly touching the Soldat next to you. The Flügelmann is the rightmost person in line. He does not turn his head but should stand still at attention. Once you have dressed, your head remains turned until ordered forward again with Augen, gerade...aus! Sharply bring your head forward on the word aus.
| Rührt Euch! | ROO-ert OIK | At Ease (silence required) |
| Rührt Euch allows the Soldat to go at ease and be in a rest position.
You may move your left foot slightly forward, feet at shoulders width
apart, and rest your weight on the right leg. Hands and arms may be
relaxed and your body allowed to rest. If this command is given while marching you are permitted to talk, sing, eat, and smoke. Rifles may also be adjusted to a more comfortable position on the left or right shoulder, or on order they can be slung or carried in your hand. If this command is given while in formation, you may not break formation without permision and wander off. Unlike marching, silence is required, no talking unless permision is granted.
| Rechts ... Um! | RECKTS OOM | Right face!/Right turn! |
| While standing: The order is to turn the body to the RIGHT. This is accomplished by turning the right heel while turning and pushing to the right with the ball of the left foot. After the turn is complete immediatly bring your left foot in line and assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military. While marching: The order is to make a right turn. It is called on the RIGHT foot, however the turn could be executed several steps later. The execution of the turn is made on command Um with the same foot but only after one more step is taken. | ||
| Links ... Um! | LEENKS OOM | Left face!/Left turn! |
| While standing: The order is to turn the body to the LEFT. This is accomplished by turning the left heel while turning and pushing to the left with the ball of the right foot. After the turn is complete immediatly bring your right foot in line and assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military. While marching: The order is to make a left turn. It is called on the LEFT foot, however the turn could be executed several steps later. The execution of the turn is made on command Um with the same foot but only after one more step is taken. | ||
| Kehrt ... Um! | KAY-ert OOM | About face! |
| Command to make a full 180 degree turn. The turn is made to the LEFT by turning on
the left heel with the ball of the right foot. When the turn is
complete immediatly bring your right foot in line with the left and
assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and
moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military. The command "Kehrt, Um" is given to individual soldiers or for very small formations such as with an honor guard (Ehrenwach). The command "Ganze Abteilung, Kehrt" is given for Gruppe or larger sized formations.
| Wegtreten! | VAYG-tray-ten | Fall out! (dismissed) |
| This command allows the Soldat to fallout and be dismissed. While in a parade square the formal Weggetreten is used instead. | ||
| (die) Augen...Rechts/Links! | (dee) OW-gen RECKTS/LEENKS | Eyes right/left! |
| When
issued, the Soldat turns his head and eyes in a quick snap to the
right or left as ordered. The rest of the body is not moved and the position is held
until the order to look forward again is given. The command to look to the right is "Augen, Rechts!". However, the command to look left is slighly different, "die Augen, Links!". If you hear "Augen" you will know to look RIGHT. If you hear "die Augen" then you know to look LEFT. When the order "Front!" or "Augen, gerade...aus!" is given, the head is snapped back to the forward position. The command is also given during inspection as "Zur Meldung...Augen...Rechts!". Everyone including the Flügelmann (right most soldier) turn their head and eyes towards the inspecting officers approach. Each man then rotates his head with his passing keeping his nose on the man and rotateing the head, not the eyes. When the inspecting officer is in front of the Soldat he then silently counts five steps to himself and then snaps his head back to the Front position.
| Marsch! | MAAR-sh | March! |
| The order to start walking. The march is initiated with the LEFT foot by taking a FULL STEP upon the word Marsch. Unit cohesion should not be lost and the hands should be flat and swung up to the belt buckle. There are two types of marches, Gleichshritt (march step) and Ohne Tritt (route step). Gruppe! Im Gleichschritt. Marsch!.
Other important commands to know while marching:
| ||
| Halt! | HALT | Halt! |
| The
order to stop walking or running. Halting is always called on
the right foot step. The soldier will make one additional step
with his left foot. This is followed by moving the now trailing right
foot into line with the left. Cohesion of the unit while moving in
formation should not be lost. Other important commands to know:
