marching commands

Angetreten!AHN-gay-tray-tenFall in! (at attention)
Dress at close interval as commanded and stand at attention as in Stillgestanden. If you have a weapon stand at attention as in Grundstellung. If you are also called to attention with Stillgestanden be sure to click your heels together. You must always fall in wearing your Feldmütze unless ordered to wear your Stahlhelm. The Gruppenführer will establish the right side of the formation and everyone should fall in to his left or rear in a line as ordered.

Antreten!AHN-tray-tenFall in! (not at attention)
Antreten is used only as a request for form up. When this is used you should form up in position but not at attention, as in Rührt, Euch. The Gruppenführer will usually use this in order inform you to quickly assemble your gear and get into position in preparation for the command Angetreten or Stillgestanden.

Stillgestanden!SHTILL-gay-shtahn-denAttention! (in formation)
Stillgestanden calls you to attention. When moving into this position your right foot stays in place while the left foot quickly goes into place as follows:
  • Heels are together with the weight of the body evenly distributed on both feet.
  • Toes point outwards not quite at a right angle but slightly less than 45 degrees.
  • Knees slightly locked
  • Upper body is fully erect and rigid.
  • Shoulders square and slightly pulled back.
  • Neck is extended off of the shoulders with head straight and chin up
  • Arms very slightly forward with the elbows out slightly. When standing in line they should almost lightly touch the person next to you.
  • Fingers are together and slightly curled with the thumb on the inner surface of the index finger.
  • Hands are against your upper thigh, with the middle finger against the seam of your Hosen.
  • Eyes are focused straight ahead.

  3. Heels are not closed together.
  4. Body weight is not evenly distributed on both feet, or are only distributed on the heels and the belly is thrust forward.

  15. Only the finger tips are touching the pants
  16. Head is bent sideways.
  17. Chin sticks out too far.
  18. Eyes are moving.
  19. Head is bent low.
  20. Body overly tense or tense neck muscles.

Richt Euch!RICKT OIKDress Right, Dress!
Richt Euch is an order to adjust your dress (your position in relation to theFlügelmann) without breaking formation. Snap your head sharply to the right and align your body and feet with the Flügelmann by making short sharp shuffles, with the cloth of your Feldtunic elbows slightly touching the Soldat next to you. The Flügelmann is the rightmost person in line. He does not turn his head but should stand still at attention.

Once you have dressed, your head remains turned until ordered forward again with Augen, gerade...aus!  Sharply bring your head forward on the word aus.

Rührt Euch!ROO-ert OIKAt Ease (silence required)
Rührt Euch allows the Soldat to go at ease and be in a rest position, but may not speak without permission. This maneuver must be performed as carefully, quickly, and taught as the other commands.

When the command is given, immediately move your left foot slightly forward and to the side, feet at shoulders width apart, and rest your weight on the right leg. The foot movement must be performed by all members simultaneously with the sound of the feet hitting the ground being heard only a single time. Hands and arms may be relaxed and your body allowed to rest, but good posture must be maintained. You may check your uniform and bring it into order with a few adjustments. Refrain from making unneeded movements.

If this command is given while marching you are permitted to talk, sing, eat, and smoke. Rifles may also be adjusted to a more comfortable position on the left or right shoulder, or on order they can be slung or carried in your hand.

Rechts ... Um!RECKTS OOMRight face!/Right turn!
While standing:
The order is to turn the body to the RIGHT. This is accomplished by turning the right heel while turning and pushing to the right with the ball of the left foot. After the turn is complete immediatly bring your left foot in line and assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military.

Rechts Um

While marching:
The order is to make a right turn. It is called on the RIGHT foot, however the turn could be executed several steps later. The execution of the turn is made on command Um with the same foot but only after one more step is taken.

Rechts Um!

Links ... Um!LEENKS OOMLeft face!/Left turn!
While standing:
The order is to turn the body to the LEFT. This is accomplished by turning the left heel while turning and pushing to the left with the ball of the right foot. After the turn is complete immediatly bring your right foot in line and assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military.

Links Um!

While marching:
The order is to make a left turn. It is called on the LEFT foot, however the turn could be executed several steps later. The execution of the turn is made on command Um with the same foot but only after one more step is taken.

Links Um!

Kehrt ... Um!KAY-ert OOMAbout face!
Command to make a full 180 degree turn. The turn is made to the LEFT by turning on the left heel with the ball of the right foot. When the turn is complete immediatly bring your right foot in line with the left and assume a position of attention. There is no pause between turning and moving your foot forward as is customary in the US military.

Kehrt Um!

The command "Kehrt, Um" is given to individual soldiers or for very small formations such as with an honor guard (Ehrenwach).

The command "Ganze Abteilung, Kehrt" is given for Gruppe or larger sized formations.

Common errors:
  1. Moving the body after the turn.
  2. Rotating too quickly.
  3. Bringing up the right leg too slowly.
  4. Turning up the heels.
  5. Improper or poor Stillgestanden position afterwards.

Wegtreten!VAYG-tray-tenFall out! (dismissed)
This command allows the Soldat to fallout and be dismissed. The command should prefaced with a direction to fall out to as follows:
  • To the left: Nach links, Wegtreten!
  • To the right: Nach rechts, Wegtreten!
  • To the front: Nach vorwärts, Wegtreten!
  • To the rear: Nach rückwarts, Wegtreten!
The commander may also provide more specific directions with the command.

To accomplish the maneuver, the men will take three quick steps in the commanded direction, wherefore according to the command they are now dismissed.
While in a parade square the formal Weggetreten is used instead.

(die) Augen...Rechts/Links!(dee) OW-gen RECKTS/LEENKSEyes right/left!
When issued, the Soldat turns his head and eyes in a quick snap to the right or left as ordered. The rest of the body is not moved and the position is held until the order to look forward again is given.

The command to look to the right is "Augen, Rechts!". However, the command to look left is slighly different, "die Augen, Links!". If you hear "Augen" you will know to look RIGHT. If you hear "die Augen" then you know to look LEFT.

When the order "Front!" or "Augen, gerade...aus!" is given, the head is snapped back to the forward position.

The command is also given during inspection as "Zur Meldung...Augen...Rechts!". Everyone including the Flügelmann (right most soldier) turn their head and eyes towards the inspecting officers approach. Each man then rotates his head with his passing keeping his nose on the man and rotateing the head, not the eyes. When the inspecting officer is in front of the Soldat he then silently counts five steps to himself and then snaps his head back to the Front position.

Ruehrt Euch

Marsch!MAAR-shMarch!
The order to start walking. The march is initiated with the LEFT foot by taking a FULL STEP upon the word Marsch. Unit cohesion should not be lost and the hands should be flat and swung up to the belt buckle.

Gruppe! Im Gleichschritt. Marsch!.
  • All movement made by the unit is in unison.

Gruppe! Ohne Tritt. Marsch! - March without step.
  • Soldiers are not required to move in unison.
